Marty Wilson – Lead Guitar

Marty

I have been playing guitar since 1987 and was trained by a music teacher named Mark Henjum of Laurel Music Studios in St Paul, Minnesota.

I was a hard student to teach the standards to, as I was always a mustang of sorts, but my wild out-of-the-box attitude and style has gained my teachers pride and brought me to the brutal Mortificator.

I have been in garage bands since I was about 13 years old, but nothing took off until I hooked up with a long time friend Bruce Busch and met Mike Ward. I played bass for them for about 6 months or so, then as we have all had happen to us…. life takes its turns, and I had to break and fix my life to a stable drug-free state. It took a few years to fix and a few stumbles to get to where I am now.

Four years ago, Bruce and I found each other again at a local bar called Shantytown in Bloomington, Minnesota where my wife, Amy, worked.

Bruce and I started to play again in my basement, we covered some Metallica and some Slayer tunes. I played lead guitar and Mike played bass, which became the Slayer tribute band Sick60Six. We had a good run, played a few parties, even gained a few fans. When we reached the threshold of playing live, we had to take a break due to a medical issue with Dan, our awesome front man at the time. After a summer off, he threw in the towel and told me to keep going without him.

Just when I thought the band was done, Mike invited me out for a drink and said that he and Bruce had been playing with a dude named Gene as a side band to stay sharp, and that things were going so good that they wanted to add me as a lead guitar player. At the time, I felt like my guys were betraying me….. but that kind of thinking didn’t last long…. Gene came over to my practice space and so began what is now Mortificator…. the best and most productive band I have ever been a part of! Gene had a unique way of writing songs that appealed to me, and he gave me free reign to explore what I could do with my abilities. Now, almost a year later, we are force to be reckoned with; an unstoppable monster, bringing heavy metal to the people of St.Paul. Enjoy!

What got me started?
My Dad, he always had tunes on…. in the car, in the house and at work. He is still a fan of Genesis, Queen, Led Zeppelin and lots of weird bands that I had never even heard of. Also, my brother Burt, who was a music lover and a heavy metal fan. In his room, I heard the sounds of Helloween, Metal Church, Manowar, Metallica, Megadeath and Pantera. I remember the first time that I heard Metallica’s Kill ’em All. It’s still my all time favorite album, and it opened me up to many of the bands that I still listen to.

My major influences are:
Dime Bag Darrel Abbot, Kirk Hammet, Dave Mustaine, Cliff Burton, Brian May, James Murphy, Brenden Small, and so many more.

Gear:
I prefer Jackson Guitars above all else but still like playing on Ibenez and Dean Guitars.
My main stage guitar is a 2012 Jackson Warrior WRXMG, built just for me from the Jackson warehouse.
My back-up guitar is a rebuilt 1994 Jackson JDR94 loaded with EMG active pickups. Both are set up with Floyd rose tremolos.
I use a Mesa single rec.solo50 with Boss, MXR, and Behringer pedals along with a Shure digital wireless system.
I use D’Addario NYXL strings, Levie’s straps,and Snark tuners.
